safe device removal

whenever i safely remove any usb device on my acer laptop (windows 7) i dont think it is safe to remove even though the little pop up box says it is. the LED light doesnt turn off until i unplug it and there is a funny sound from the computer speakers that resembles the sound from windows XP when u dont safely remove a device.When I use windows XP i safely remove my devices and the LED lights on my devices shut off, when i pull the device out there is no sound from the audio. Is something wrong with the usb ports? will continued use of the usb ports damage my devices? is it safe to continue as before?
