Computer keeps turning off

Lately my computer has been turning itself off for no reason. It used to just turn off when I was hosting quizzes in aol quiz room, now it turns off quite frequently ie: a couple of times in one hour. Any suggestions as to why?

Answer Does it just immediately shut off? Or do you get any type of warning message first? Is it a laptop or desktop? Laptops are prone to overheat if the air vent is blocked. Desktops could be the same thing but typically due to a faulty power supply. It could also be software so please follow this tutorial 'Make your computer faster'.

Answer I'm using a desktop computer and i get no warning before it shuts off. I asked my question on a few sites and some people told me just to clean inside it, i did that and it was full of dust. So far it hasn't turned off but i haven't hosted yet. This is what loads when i turn my computer on, would it be possible to tell me what should and should not be running at the start. Soundman, VTtimer,VTtrayp, PDVDserve,RECGUARD,Aoldial, Realplay,Aolsoftware, AVGtray, jusched, CNSLMAIN,BJmyprt,SSBkgdupdate,OpwareSE4,Adobe reader spe..., AOL9trayicon. Thanks for you help julie

Answer When you MSCONFIG remove the check under 'Startup' everything except for AVGtray. Restart after that, that should be a big help. Let me know how that works out :)

Answer This could be caused by a couple of things. Either you have a PS problem or a bad power line connection. If the AVG were at fault you would see the shutdown screen or an error message (normally). If your power supply is older than three years old I would suspect that being the problem. If not look for loose power connections. After time the viberations of CDROMs, HDDs, and System Fans can cause power connections become loose. Unplug each power connection and look for dullo spots on the pins. Plug them back in securely. If you are a smoker and smoke while on the computer you may be able to see the tar residue on the pins. If so try cleaning the pins before you reconnect them. If you do not see any dull spots on the power connections check check all fans to insure that they have NO gunk on them and that they are spinning freely. If they are the problem is probally your Power Supply. It takes very little voltage drop to anything connected to your MoBo for the computer to turn off. And fortunately Power Supplies are pretty inexpensive. Good luck and I hope you FIX your system! A Day without the Internet is like a Day smiling :) Zod
