WordPerfect X3 Freezes

I'm currently in North Carolina on vacation. I just recently installed a server at a clients office before I left. Everything was fine for two days but then I get a phone call, they are unable to start Wordperfect X3. Blurg! I'll save you my troubleshooting but I will say that it just starts, then doesn't do anything and anything you try and do just causes a white screen - typical no response.

What I had to do was  Click the Start button and then click Run. When the Run window appears, type REGEDIT and then click OK. This opens your Registry Editor (see warning above). Double-click the HKEY_CURRENT_USER folder and then double-click SOFTWARE. Right-click the COREL folder and then select Rename from the pop-up menu. Rename the folder CorelOld. Close the Registry Editor window.

I want to thank Smartcomputing.com for showing me the way. Luckily thats all I had to do! Hope this helps someone else out and saves some vacation time!

One of the most frequently asked questions lately is how to fix the XPRT5.DLL error with America Online. This problem seems to stem from users running America Online 9.0 and its component the AOL Dialer.

You may be getting an error message such as

Aoldial.exe-entry_point_not_found (or Aol.exe) "?SetModeTBlockCipher@xprt@@QAEXW4ECipherMode@12@@Z could not be located in the dynamic library xprt5.dll"

This problem is especially annoying because it stops the user from getting online and even using the AOL security scan software. Fortunately the error is pretty easily fixed by downloading AOL Beta ACS 4.6 Connectivity software. You can download this software by following this how to guide.

Super AntiSpyware

If you are like me then you have tried basically every single Adware, Virus, Spyware removal out there. It's difficult to know which ones are 'real' and what ones are fake, which ones actually are actually the cause of spyware infections.

Like always when removing a virus it is typically a very manual process. Basically starting out as removing all unknown startup programs, restarting, seeing what ones came back and how to remove them. I've recently come across a new software program called Super AntiSpyware. It's actually very good and has helped me remove a lot of bad programs. Just install it, update it, boot into safe mode and have it run a full scan. That's it!

Firefox 3 Beta 2 & Memory Leaks

Today I read on Slashdot that Mozilla has released a new beta of their Firefox 3 browser. Normally this isn't super exciting news. The new browser beta is visually almost the same as the previous models. So what makes it exciting?

There's an incredible speed increase! They seemed to have fixed a lot of problems that are associated with the previous versions. Mainly memory leaks were fixed. What is a memory leak? Well when software programs need to access memory to do something, sometimes they will reserve the memory, use it and then never release it back for other programs to use. So over time the browser will use up more memory than is needed, and worst of all that memory isn't used for anything, its just stuck.

Want to learn more? Of course you do :) Check out the Wikipedia on Memory Leaks.

Hope this was informative, now go download the beta and enjoy a much faster browsing experience.

Its the same deal, you try and delete a file only to get that same damn error message over and over again 'Access Denied'. So you try booting into safe mode and still the same error?? Well there is another trick you can try and it involves using one or even two of these great programs. They try other methods to remove the file including stopping a specific process when trying to delete and even restarting Explorer.exe during the file deletion. If that does not work it can even set to remove the file during the next reboot.

So if a file is giving you some problems give these great programs a try!
